Years Employed:
• Undergrad intern: 1988 – 1989
• Graduate Assistant: 1989 – 1991
• Producer Trainee: 1991 – 1992
What are you doing now:
I'm a general assignment and political reporter for CBS 4 Denver. I started at this station in 1998, after doing stints in Rockford, IL and Grand Rapids, MI. I have covered just about every kind of story imagineable. While most of my work appears in Colorado newscasts, my reporting has also appeared in national broadcasts for CBS, CNN and FOX news.
Fond memory of Media Services:
I remember one time, I was lying in bed, sleeping at my parents house in Rockford. I get this phone call from Kurt Schultz. He said, "Where the "bleep" are you, you're supposed to be running audio for the coaches' show!" I thought he was calling to fire me. Instead, he said "give it the old college try, and get here ASAP." I scrambled out of bed, and drove from Rockford to Dekalb in record time. I made it to Media Services just in time for the second half of the show. I got some harsh looks, but happily, I didn't get fired. I haven't missed a shoot since.
How Media Services employment helped your career:
At Media Services, I learned to shoot, edit, and produce complete products for clients. I also learned, directing, script writing, lighting, audio, and professional responsibility. That experience gave me the skills, confidence, and resume reel to get my first job as a photojournalist/reporter at WREX in Rockford. I also took advantage of learning from the many Media Services veterans who had prior experience at news outlets, production campanies, etc. I constantly picked their brains for ideas on how to conduct a job search, and got a sense of what to expect in that first job. Media Services was great preparation for my chosen career in broadcast journalism.
