Recent growth in the technology needs for the video board operations in the Convocation Center has led to an expansion of the video operations control room there.
Over the last year, Media Services’ Video/AV Coordinator at the Convocation Center, Patrick Gorman, has expanded several services at the request of NIU Intercollegiate Athletics and the Convocation Center. These include character generator operations for in-game trivia contests, scorebug operations for keying the game time and score over the various in-house monitors, as well as live video streaming of basketball games and other athletic events over the NIU Athletics website.
These additional requests resulted in additional equipment and staffing, making the video control booth a very cramped and busy place to work. Through a collaboration of efforts and funding between the Convocation Center and Media Services, work has begun on a plan to expand the operation into an additional space at the opposite end of the suite deck level. The spaces will be divided into two main functional areas. The current location will house all of the equipment and personnel necessary to operate the gameday video operations. The new expanded area will house auxiliary functions such as graphics production, video editing, and arena lighting. The plan is to have both areas equipped and operational by October 1, 2007.
